Athens exceeded expectations.
Athens can be described in two ways; Athens the historic city, and Athens the modern city of cheeky colours and gritty character.
Both are true, and for us, equally as enjoyable.
With only 24 hours in Athens, we were complete tourists. Using visitacity.com, we planned our day out that morning. As we walked to the next monument, we’d bring up the Wikipedia page and give ourselves a crash course in what we were about to see. We’d then play tour guide and explain the place to each other as if we knew what we were talking about.
The history is fascinating. To think that the Acropolis is regarded as the most important building in the history of Western Civilisation is incredible.
One thing we also really enjoyed was how Athens continually surprised us throughout the day. From losing ourselves in the back streets of Plaka and finding the charming Anifiotika, a Greek Island escape in the middle of the city. To making friends in a laundromat and continuing the conversations over a glass of wine in the bar next door.
Also, we discovered Souvlaki and our lives will never be the same.
Make the most of Athens. You won’t regret getting up early, or walking a bit further to see one more sight before going back to your hotel. It’s fascinating.
Okay, here’s the pics!
