Sun City is a world unto itself, and what a wonderful world it is.
After an action packed start to our South African adventure in Johannesburg we were excited for this mini luxury escape!
Due to some unseasonal weather, and you may notice in the photos, Sun City for us was more of an Overcast City but this didn’t stop us enjoying every aspect of our stay.
There are several accommodation options in Sun City Resort and we were excited to be staying at the lavish Palace of the Lost City. On our arrival we were given a tour of the hotel and were blown away by the scale of the place (it is called a palace after all!). We were then treated to exclusive sunset drinks in the Kings Tower with beautiful views over the resort. Buzzed on champagne and with the reality setting in that this was our home for the next two nights we headed back down into the hotel for a meat eaters dream dine at The Grill Room.
We greeted day two bright and early in hope of a sunrise hot air balloon ride. However, it wasn’t to be due to heavy rains. We were very happy with our consolation prize of an afternoon game drive and a slow day relaxing in the resort. This entailed a humungous buffet breakfast in the Crystal Court, a dawdle around the lush hotel grounds, Valley of the Waves (because every city needs a beach!), lunch and cocktails at The Brew Monkey, a dip in the hotel pool and then our much awaited game drive in Pilanesberg Game Reserve!
In the evening we were completely spoilt with a private candle-lit three course dinner in The Palace Gazebo to celebrate our sixth wedding anniversary. If this wasn’t enough The Palace staff (there would have been 30 of them!) serenaded us with a Zulu wedding song whilst parading us down the hotel. WOW!
On our final day at Sun City we set off on a Leeto-Kgolo Village Tour and learnt about the history of the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela tribe. We explored the museum and then took a bicycle tour with stops at four Bakgatla heritage sites. The constant rain definitely added to our adventure!
So Sun City hey? It’s pretty incredible! Needless to say we returned home with the fondest memories and some wet clothes. Hopefully we can return one day!
